Why the 2012 US Presidential Elections are important to the world?

The 2012 elections in the US represent a watershed moment for the world. US is bogged down in Afghanistan. Its relationship with its troubled and reluctant ally Pakistan is strained more than usual. The US Supreme Court is about to rule on Obama's healthcare. For our continuing coverage of the Healthcare law and its constitutionality, please visit http://globallegalforum.blogspot.com/.

The Candidates:

Incumbent: Barack Obama (D)

Challenger: Mitt Romney (R)

Barack Obama- first African American to hold the presidential office. A christian by faith, he is dogged with allegations of being Muslim (not that religion is a constitutional bar in the US). Barack Obama is on the whole a liberal and to some extent a progressive. His recent evolution on Gay Marriage and his pronouncements vis a vis immigrants has thrilled his supporters who were losing hope while it has given the conservatives another stick to beat the embattled President with.

Mitt Romney- an equally impressive conservative challenger, this gentleman belongs to the Mormon faith which has long been seen with suspicion by mainstream Christianity. His views sit in well with US Conservative establishment. However, his challenge will be to convince his conservative voters that his faith poses no danger to Christian values of the mainstream America.
